Email and Virus Scanning
TCB delivers unprecedented
levels of enterprise email security in the fight against spam and other email
system attacks.
Email Hosting
Primary Email Hosting
TCB Associates,
Inc. offers SMTP/POP and Web Based email for your domain and
accounts.
Primary email hosting is like the service
you receive from your ISP. Your email domain is hosted by TCB. All of
your email is sent and received through your email accounts that we
host. Customizable Spam control is included
with every email account.
Optional services available with
Primary Email Hosting: Email Virus
Scanning Service
Simple Forwarding
TCB Associates, Inc. can act as a simple
forwarder for your domain. This is similar to primary email hosting,
except that only a single user account is required. All mail received
for your domain is forwarded to an external email address of your
choice. Simple forwarding service does not include SMTP or POP services.
Optional services available with
Simple Forwarding:
Email Virus Scanning Service and Email
Spam Control Service
Backup Email Services
Offering backup MX
for your domain.
Backup email service means that TCB acts
as a secondary, or backup, email server for your domain. On those
occasions when your mail server is not available to accept incoming
messages, your email is routed to us. Email routed in this manner is
held here pending delivery to your primary email server. Backup email
service does not include SMTP or POP services.
Email Virus Scanning
Service
TCB Associates, Inc. uses Symantec's Norton AntiVirus for Gateways
and Sonicwall Firewall to filter its own
incoming email, and optionally offers this service to its email customers. When
using our antivirus email filtering, all incoming email is routed through our
Sonicwall and then the NAV for Gateways server prior to being delivered or forwarded to you.
In addition to virus scanning of email, the following attachment file types
are removed from emails processed by our NAV for Gateways server.

Email Spam Control Service
Customizable Spam control is included with every
account! It is important to understand that spam detection is more art than
science, and there is always the possibility of having a legitimate email
filtered as spam.
Here are some of the tests that we run to
help prevent Spam from ever reaching your inbox:
- MAPS RBL - This used to be the
most popular test, used by many large ISPs. It tries to block sources
that allow spam to be sent through their servers, and do not do
anything to prevent it. It now requires a subscription from
mail-abuse.org.
- Envelope Mail From - This tests
the "From" address as listed in the SMTP envelope, to make sure that
the domain has an MX or A record. Or, if you want to be super strict,
you can just check the MX record.
- MAPS DUL - DUL has a list of
many "dial-up lines", or IP addresses of people connecting with a
modem. Most spammers use a dial-up connection to connect to an
innocent mail server (possibly yours!) to do the dirty work. This
doesn't trap much legitimate E-mail, since those usually will go
through a real mail server. It now requires a subscription from
mail-abuse.org.
- OSRSS - OsiruSofts Open Relay
Spam Stopper. Another list of spammers' IP addresses. Includes 5
different databases.
- Reverse DNS - Checks to make
sure that a reverse DNS entry exists for the IP address sending you
the mail. The RFCs require a reverse DNS entry, and lots of spam is
sent from IPs without a reverse DNS entry. However, there are quite a
few legitimate mail servers set up without a reverse DNS entry.
- NOPOSTMASTERS - This database
lists domains that do not have a postmaster addresses (which violates
RFCs).
- NOABUSE - This database lists
domains that do not have an abuse address, which also is required.
- DSN - You can use this database
to handle E-mail coming from domains that block bounce messages (which
can cause you extra work).
- BADHEADERS - Looks for broken
E-mail headers, that are common in spam as spammers try to forge
headers. This test can't accidentally catch any legitimate mail
(except mail from broken E-mail clients, probably beta versions).
- SPAMROUTING - Looks for E-mail
that takes a very poorly defined path that wastes bandwidth. For
example, a U.S. spammer sending to a recipient in the U.S., but
relaying through a server in China would trigger this test.
- WEIGHTING - This unique test
(in the latest beta version of Declude JunkMail) assigns each of the
other tests a weight (which you can change if you like), and once an
E-mail fails enough tests to reach a certain "trigger" value, the
WEIGHTING test will mark the E-mail as spam. This will allow you to
use tests that have high false positive rates, while not worrying as
much about losing legitimate mail.
- HELOBOGUS - This test will
detect invalid HELO (or EHLO) data. For example, one major spammer now
sends E-mail claiming to be from a mailserver called "$domain", which
is not the name of a real mailserver. The HELOBOGUS test will catch
that.
Message Sniffer
What Is
Message Sniffer?
Message Sniffer
is a powerful spam filter and email content scanner which provides
sophisticated message filtering and classification services to ISPs,
educational institutions, small businesses and corporate IT
departments. The utility leverages MicroNeil's advanced pattern
recognition technologies to simultaneously apply thousands of
heuristic algorithms while using relatively little computing power.
The efficiency, speed and depth of this technology make it practical
to filter incoming and outgoing email messages based on content - in
real time, even on very busy server systems.
The Message
Sniffer service includes a subscription to our advanced spam filtering
database which is maintained and updated around the clock by examining
and categorizing unsolicited commercial Email messages, pornography
advertisements, and other unwanted content. This content is submitted
by our users or captured by our research teams using anonymous "spamtrap"
accounts.
Message
Sniffer Improves Security & Privacy!
The Message
Sniffer utility does not actually filter messages itself. Rather, it
integrates with your email system andidentifies pattern matches which
indicate that messages are likely to contain specific content. The
Email administrator can then decide to filter out these messages, mark
them in some way so that the end user can filter them, or track them
through their system for some other purpose (such as corporate
security and privacy requirements - HIPAA, HCFA, etc...). Since
Message Sniffer scans the entire contents of a message it is possible
to develop sophisticated rule bases for specialized applications.
